Museum of Oxford || Digital Artist Residency
Museum of Oxford and Digital Artist Residency are jointly hosting an opportunity for an artist working in digital media to respond to the theme of Hidden Histories and the new Museum of Oxford galleries. Hidden Histories is a Museum of Oxford NHLF funded capital project to redevelop the museum’s galleries, and tell the story of the city with the people who have lived here. It celebrates the vibrant cultural contributions made to life in Oxford from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day.
The Museum of Oxford has been working with local Oxford community groups and a team of external consultants for 3 years, developing the stories that will be seen in the new museum’s galleries when they open in September 2021.
The digital residency provides an online space on DAR’s site for artists to develop works, ideas and practices. The resulting work will culminate in an exhibition at the Museum of Oxford during the first few months of the Museum of Oxford’s reopening. The Hidden Histories residency will take place online from 1st October to 31st December 2021, coinciding with the physical exhibition at the Museum of Oxford in November - January.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for UK-based artists to propose new works which use digital processes and techniques to create work around the theme of Hidden Histories in response to exhibits in the new Museum of Oxford. The residencies are open to artists working in any discipline and/or medium, and from anywhere in UK, however it is desirable that the chosen artist has a close connection to Oxford and/or is able to visit for research trips.
We are interested in projects that deal with research interactions between exhibit from the museum and digital processes. Artists would need to communicate clearly how these works would be appropriate for DAR’s online context and the new Museum of Oxford. DAR is accepting proposals from practitioners in media that may include performance, sculpture, film, video, New media, video, Sonic art, live works and cross-disciplinary practices. We are also interested in artists working with exclusively online practices too. Groups may apply as well as individuals.
Information about the new Museum of Oxford:
The new Museum of Oxford will open in Autumn 2021 after a major capital redevelopment, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, and other funders. The only museum to tell the story of the city of Oxford and its people, we have been working with our communities while we were closed, to collect stories about local people and their experiences in Oxford.
