IN-SONORA is a platform aimed at supporting and showing experimental artistic proposals related to sound and interactive art from an open and multidisciplinary point of view. Since 2005, IN-SONORA has coordinated activities and participation for this international biennial event in Madrid. IN-SONORA celebrates the 10th edition of its International Sound and Interactive Art Exhibition by opening a general call for projects and two calls for artistic residencies: virtual Twitter Residencies for online projects and a production residency at the Medialab-prado Institute (Madrid). This event is open to installations in sound and interactive objects, live experimental events, sound pieces, video pieces, debates, public presentations and workshops…

 

1. General Open Call

From February 20th to March 31, 2017, participants will be able to present installation proposals, live event proposals, video and sound pieces, and workshops for inclusion in the 10th edition of the exposition. 

Who can participate:

Spanish and international, foreign artists of any nationality aged 18 years or older are permitted to participate. However, special attention is paid to emerging artists or those who have not participated in previous years.

Date / When to apply:

Applications can be submitted from the 20 of February to the 17th of April of 2017. Projects will not be accepted after this date.

The 10th Exhibition of IN-SONORA Muestra de Arte Sonoro e Interactivo will be held in March of 2018. The dates will be specified once projects have been selected. 

Proposal Requirements:

Each participant can present as many proposals as he/she wishes. Each proposal should be followed by its relevant request.

The selected proposal must be produced before the end of 2017 and include everything necessary for the presentation.

 The following documentation is required:

 ))) Personal Information: First name and last name, place and date of birth, nationality,

address, city, country of residence and a short CV (max. 1500 characters).

))) Contact Details: Email, web, phone and/or Skype.

 ))) Details of the Work: Please include the title, year and a short description of the work (max. 200 characters), as well as a conceptual description (max. 700 characters), technical description (max. 700 characters), the technical requirements of the piece (max. 750 characters), its size, the approximate duration and current status of the work, and any other pertinent information.

))) Documentation of the Work:

It is necessary to attach a dossier with documentation of previous works. (5 MB maximum, must be in .PDF format with selectable text).

 - Images (up to 2 MB per image).

- Audio and video files and information. They will need to be online and the link will be required for its listening or viewing. 

NOTE: Depending on the specific format chosen, here are some conditions which are detailed on the form:

- Events must last up to 40 minutes maximum.

- Video should last up to 10 minutes maximum. They need to be online (Youtube, Vimeo, Personal URL...) and the link for viewing them should be indicated.

- Sound pieces should last up to 5 minutes maximum. They need to be online (Myspace, Soundcloud, Personal URL ...) and the link for listening to them should be specified.

- Net.Art pieces and Netlabels should be online. The URL is required.

- For conferences, please indicate the number of speakers.

- For workshops, please indicate the approximate cost and number of teachers involved.

))) Jury 

The jury will be composed of IN-SONORA team members and professionals in the world of sound-based and interactive art. An undetermined number of pieces in each format will be selected, taking into account the quality and viability of the proposals. The jury reserves the right to request more information about the work of the participants, if necessary, for a proper assessment. The verdict of the jury will be announced April 28, 2017. The list of the elected participants will be sent through Curator Space, by email to all registered participants and posted on the web.

))) IN-SONORA Commitment:

The IN-SONORA association works every year to develop and carry out an exhibition of international and interactive sound art projects in the city of Madrid. In order to fulfill this objective, it carries out different tasks:

- The launching of an international public call, dissemated among all media channels and among previous collaborators.

- The reception and study of all the projects received by the jury, after it has selected an optimal number of works.

- Contact with different cultural spaces in Madrid that will host the exhibition.

Exhibition coordination and the design of the general program and showrooms, taking into account the specific needs of each work.

Seeking grants and support to improve the conditions of artists, staff and equipment.

Seeking press and broadcasting of the entire program on the website www.in-sonora.org, as well as in a printed publication and among professional networks and bulletins. IN-SONORA also seeks to maintain contact with the media.  

))) Technical Equipment:

IN-SONORA has an assembly technician who studies all the installations and gives facilities to the artists, as well as a sound technician who attends live events.

))) Materials:

IN-SONORA has at its disposal basic technical equipment for live events:

4 amplifiers M-AUDIO Studiophile BX8A Deluxe 130w + 4 bases

Mixing console 14 channels Mackie 1402-VLZ3 + mixing console 12 channels Yamaha 12 MG124c.

- 2 voice microphones Behringher XM8500, 1 microphone Shure 58. 

All equipment that doesn't appear on this list must be provided by the artist.

))) Artist's Contribution:

- The works presented must be technically archived already. The artists are responsible for providing the technical means to properly present the works during the exhibition.

- Artists will accept the space assigned to them in the festival and collaborate on any possible adaptation of their work to comply with any possible constraints the space might impose.

IN-SONORA cannot afford transportation fees, insurances, stipends per diem, etc.

- The selected artists will releasethe exhibition rights to IN-SONORA, whether this be images, writings or documentation produced during the exhibition, to be used only for the promotion of the project and not for any commercial purposes under the regulations stated in Creative Commons By-NC-SA.

- Artists with installations will be in charge of the assembly and dismantling of their piece. Those with events must be present on rehearsal days and also deal with the assembly and dismantling of the stage.

- Enthusiasm, commitment and an ability to work the IN-SONORA team, since they have put forth the effort to make this event possible.

If you participate as an artist in this event, you are acknowledging and agreeing to the terms and conditions outlined previously in these guidelines. In the case that the artist does not comply with the requirements hereby detailed within this document, his/her application will be dismissed.

We are proud to receive support from the Community of Madrid, Medialab-prado, La Casa Encendida, IED Madrid and the Swinton & Grant Galleries, as well as the collaboration of Playtime. We’d also like to thank IED Madrid and its students of the One Year Course in Digital Arts and Design of Experiences, and the Master’s Degree program in Electroacoustic Composition CSKG.

 

 

 

2. Collaborative Production Residency in Medialab-Prado

In conjunction with the 10th edition of the In Sonora exposition, Medialab-Prado is currently presenting an open call for audiovisual artists to participate in a collaborative production residency at the Medialab-Prado Headquarters in Madrid. The residency will be held from 26 February to 18 March 2018 at the Medialab-Prado headquarters in Madrid. The objective of the call is the selection of 1 project, to be developed during the following dates over the course of the residency period: From February 26 to March 18, 2018. Proposals may be submitted through the online web form from February 23 to April 23, 2017: http://medialab-prado.es/article/convocatoria- de-residencia- artistica-para- in-sonora- 10.

OBJECTIVE OF THE OPEN CALL:

The objective of the call is the selection of one project, to be developed over the course of the following dates: February 26th to March 18th, 2018.

DATES OF THE OPEN CALL:

Commencement date of the call for projects: February 26th, 2017

End date of call for projects: April 23rd, 2017

Publication date of selected projects: February 26th - March 18th, 2018

ORIENTATION OF THE PROJECT(S):

Medialab-Prado is a public workspace centered on the production, research and dissemination of cultural projects that explore forms of experimentation and collaborative learning in the advent of digital networks. It is also owned by the City of Madrid’s Department of Culture and Sports. During the residency period, Medialab-Prado will provide the resident with a bedroom and a workshop area for the development of their project, as well as provide access to the institution’s facilities and available tools.

Medialab-Prado funds this program with the aim of stimulating creative production and the development of artistic projects and works that enable citizen participation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Candidates may choose to explore one of the following topics for their residency:

  • Experimental sound-based and audiovisual creative projects that use free and open forms of technology.

  • Audiovisual projects exploring the use of digital interaction and interfaces for creative purposes.

  • Projects that work from a creative perspective to provide a visualization of data.

PROVISIONS:

A stipend of 1,500 euros, to which applicable taxes and withholdings apply and which includes maintenance fees.

Round-trip air ticket (up to a maximum of 1,000 euros)

Accommodation by Medialab-Prado in the apartments located at its headquarters.

A maximum of 500 euros, to be allocated towards materials for the production and development of the project and managed by the staff of Medialab-Prado.

INSURANCE & VISAS:

The organization suggests that selected participants cover their own health and travel insurance costs. In addition, please be advised about any visa requirements necessary for entry into Spain, depending on your nationality.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION:

Participants must complete and submit the form on the Medialab-Prado website. Interested parties should provide the following information:

A brief synopsis outlining the trajectory of the project and its development, as well as a plan of work for the course of the residency period; a Curriculum Vitae and a dossier of previous works. If the files, videos, images and/or demos exceed the size specified in our visual platform, participants should submit a link(s) to the site(s) where the content is hosted.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

  • Compliance with the general objectives and the themes expressed in this open call

  • An innovative and experimental character.

  • Clarity of the proposal and how well it adapts to the methodology and development constraints of the residency program.

SELECTION COMMITTEE:

A committee comprised of the Medialab-Prado team and organizers of the In-Sonora Festival will make the final selection.

AGREEMENT WITH SELECTED PARTICIPANT:

Selected participants agree to the finalization of adequate documentation covering their proposed projects.

Selected participants agree to stay for three weeks between the dates indicated above.

Accepted projects must embrace and encourage the participation of other individuals or creative who may be interested in attending any open workshops.

Selected participants agree to lead the open workshops conducted for other registered participants.

Basic information regarding the projects, concerning both their processes and results, is to be recorded in the Medialab-Prado collaborative work platform featured on their website.

The participant must keep his/her code in a public access repository, allowing for the reuse of their free license.

The organization agrees to encourage and support the use of free programs for the development of projects.

Once the residency period has concluded, participants agree to withdraw their materials within a maximum period of 15 days. After this period has passed, Medialab-Prado reserves the right to do with them whatever it deems most convenient.

COPYRIGHT & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY:

Open call participants whose projects (textual, photographic or visual) are selected must have their works licensed under a creative license that allows Medialab-Prado the right to publish them in any physical or digital format, within the maximum territorial and temporal boundaries of the law and in accordance with what they deem to be the best method for their distribution. Once the works have been selected and presented within the course of this exhibition, the artist is obliged to allow any other participating individuals to utilize their work as a basis for the development or performance of any other derivative works.

Participation in this open call implies the absolute acceptance of all its aforementioned policies.

 

 

 

 

 

3. Twitter Residencies

This initiative consists of the development of virtual artistic residencies on the @twIn_sonora Twitter account. Interested creatives must submit a project to be developed in this account for 7 days, coinciding with the celebration of IN-SONORA 10 in the month of March (and beginning of April) of 2018.

The Twitter artist in the @twIn_sonora residency program is pleased to announce the launch of its 2nd edition in the framework of IN-SONORA 10 (Madrid, 2018). This initiative consists of the development of artistic residencies for visual art in our Twitter account of the same name. Interested creatives must present a project that will be developed in this account during the 7 days of the month of March (and beginning of April) of 2018.

The jury will select a maximum of five projects, evaluating how well each project adapts to the characteristics of the social network Twitter and how well it relates to expressions or concepts related to sound.

- Promote artistic experimentation on alternative digital platforms such as Twitter.

- Produce experimental artistic works focused on sound.

- Increase the production of open-ended, procedural works.

- Generate opportunities for interaction between the virtual community and the artist
