Open Call for Inbegriff: A multidisciplinary platform that explores the legitimacy and limitations of tattooing as an artistic practice.

About

Through a digital platform that showcases conversations with, and art work from, contemporary tattoo artists, combined with a series of events that encourage discussion between artists, gallerists, curators and academics, Inbegriff reflect on the applicability of art- curatorial approaches to tattoo art. The aim is to develop models for exhibiting tattoo art beyond the traditional gallery space.

Art works will feature tattoo designs and art works that cover other media, such as paint, print, photography and performance art from tattoo artists. In partnership with NR Studios, Inbegriff will host performances that incorporate tattoo art, including from Body of Reverbs, a sonified tattoo ritual, as well as a panel discussion between gallerists, curators, tattoo artists on the barriers to and opportunities for tattoo art within the currently structures of the art world. The first event will take place at N.R. Studio in London in September 2019.

Background

With its increasing popularity, tattoo art has gradually made its way into exhibition spaces. A lot of this however has focused on the ethnological aspect or been used as a medium used by conceptual artists. Rarely is it approached from an art critical or curatorial perspective similar to other art forms.

While the negative connotations that once surrounded the practice play a role, much suggests that this is mainly due to the difficulty of integrating tattoo art within the existing commercial, physical and conceptual structures of the art world.

This is at the same time what makes it such a powerful medium and invites us to reimagine art beyond the traditional gallery space. Art as something part of our daily lives, as we can carry around with use, even on our skin.

How to apply?

Inbegriff invites submissions of UK-based and international tattoo artists across different media, including but not limited to painting, print, photography, collage, video and live performances to feature on the website, together with an interview with the artists and/or be exhibited on the evening of the event.
