Juxtapose Art Fair is a new, non-commercial fair that aims to showcase and celebrate the diversity of the artist-run sector.

Juxtapose Art Fair showcases initiatives that are led and organized by visual artists, such as artist-run exhibition spaces, artist collectives, independent art publications, online platforms, and other projects that fall outside the walls of museums and commercial galleries. By bringing these initiatives together in one space, the fair aims to highlight the unique profile of each project.

Juxtapose seeks to create visibility for artist-led initiatives in a welcoming atmosphere that engages a broad viewing public. We will showcase 20-30 initiatives through a combination of exhibitions, talks, and other activities that will unfold throughout Godsbanen - a creative hub in central Aarhus, Denmark.

Juxtapose Art Fair also aims to create opportunities for mutual learning and international networking between the participating initiatives. The fair will feature a one-day conference (made in collaboration with Artist Run Network Europe), a Nordic visiting curator program, and a series of targeted meetings and discussion groups.

We are now seeking applications from artist-run initiatives to participate in the first edition of Juxtapose Art Fair on June 4-6, 2021. Initiatives may include artist-run exhibition spaces, artist collectives, independent art publications, online platforms, or other artist-run organizations and collaborative projects.

We invite you to propose a project that best represents your initiative’s unique profile. Projects can be in any media, including performative, interactive, and temporal artworks and activities. What could you show, or do, or make at the fair, that would most effectively communicate your initiative’s core mission?

Selected initiatives will be exhibited in Godsbanen’s Rå Hal, a former freight train garage. Think outside the booth - how could you best utilize this space to showcase your initiative?

Proposals are not binding, as we expect projects to evolve in the lead-up to the fair.

There is no application fee. However, selected initiatives will be required to pay a participation fee of 4.000 DKK (€535). This fee covers representation in Rå Hal, participation in the fair’s one-day conference about the artist-run sector, meetings with Nordic curators, a profile in the fair catalogue, and visibility on the fair’s online platforms. The Juxtapose team will provide letters of invitation in support of the selected initiative’s fundraising efforts.
