*NEW EVENT FOR 2024* Call for BRADFORD-BASED designer-makers working in a wide range of HANDMADE disciplines to show and sell work at the MAKE IT Bradford pop-up creative mini market on Saturday 4th May 2024.

Saltaire Inspired is proud to announce a brand new event for Saltaire Arts Trail 2024, taking place on the opening day, Saturday 4th May.

MAKE IT Bradford is a one-day pop-up creative market, developed to celebrate the art, craft and design talent specifically within the Bradford district. The market will provide an exclusive opportunity for a selected handful of Bradford-based makers and small businesses of creative visual arts products, to showcase and sell their work to audiences attracted by the Saltaire Arts Trail and local residents, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, with free entry to all visitors.

Arts event organisers, Saltaire Inspired are looking to select high-quality, original work to show and sell at this creative market, with A FOCUS ON HANDMADE PRACTICES in ceramics, textiles, jewellery, glass, metal, artists' books, paper, leather, wood, furniture, plastics, fashion textiles and accessories, printmaking, illustration, mixed media and more.

As Saltaire Inspired specialises in delivering visual arts events, we are NOT looking for applications to sell food/drink, healthcare/beauty, bath and fragrance (such as candles), plants or wholesale purchased products for resale.

Event Dates: Saturday 4th May 2023 (taking place during the annual Saltaire Arts Trail).

MAKE IT Bradford

The MAKE IT Bradford market will form a part of the wider programme of events within Saltaire Inspired's annual festival of contemporary visual art, the Saltaire Arts Trail, which has been running since 2006 and is sited in the unique public and residential spaces of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire village. The MAKE IT Bradford market on Saturday will be followed by Saltaire Inspired's flagship Saltaire Makers Fair on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May at Victoria Hall.

The venue, Salt Building is found centrally on the bustling Victoria Road in Saltaire, well known for its numberous independent shops and businesses, and is both attractive and historically unique - a great setting for a creative market. Salt Building is home to Shipley College and is located directly over the road from Victoria Hall, commonly regarded as the center of activity during the Saltaire Arts Trail bank holiday weekend. Audiences will have the opportunity to see unique and original handmade products, buy directly from the artists and makers, and meet the creative talent behind the work.

Saltaire Inspired has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality and well attended craft and art fairs, with over 15 years of experience. Our annual flagship Saltaire Makers Fair events welcome an average of 800-1000 visitors each day, consisting of targeted audiences who have an interest in and appreciate the value of handmade craft and design. We will be using our vast knowledge and marketing strategies to attract these same audiences, as well as new ones, to the new MAKE IT Bradford market.

What kind of work are you looking for?
Artist-created work of original concept and excellent quality in the fields of contemporary ceramics & sculpture, textiles, jewellery, glass, metal, artists' books, paper, leather, wood, furniture, plastics, fashion textiles and accessories, printmaking, illustration and mixed media - this is not an exclusive list, we are always keen to see interesting use of new materials.

Work must also be handmade and/or designed by the individual applying for this opportunity, as MAKE IT Bradford is an opportunity for the public to meet the makers in person.

We would like to offer the public work at a range of prices, but are also keen to promote the appreciation and sale of higher-priced, signature items.

Any products featuring reproductions of the applicant's original artwork, which have been outsourced for manufacturing, must be produced within the UK.
What is the cost for a stall?
£50 per stall. Fee is non-refundable.

All stalls will consist of an approx. 6x4ft floor space, with one 5x2ft trestle table and 1-2 chairs provided. There is no display-board option or wall space available at this event, however you may bring your own free-standing back-boards, providing they fit within your allocated space.

Fees will be requested upon successful application and must be paid promptly upon receipt of the invoice in February 2024. No commission will be taken on sales.

Can I share a space with another maker?
We are happy to receive applications for joint stalls, where appropriate. If two makers would like to share one stall, please submit one joint application which must include descriptions, web addresses and images submitted for both makers. The joint application would be judged as a whole and if selected, both makers would then share a single stall fee.

Group submissions of more than two makers (collectives/studio groups) would need to present their work together as a single display, where the work is related in subject matter, style, technique etc. or intended to be shown as a coherent joint display.
How many/what kind of images should I submit?
You can attach up to 10 images as part of your application. To help us with selection, please upload a minimum of 4.

It is vital to the selection process that the images you submit are of a good quality and give a true idea of the work you wish to show. If possible, please also include one image showing your stall display from another fair/market.

Please upload JPG images, no larger than 4MB. If you are selected, the images will be used initially as part of an online gallery, so we only need them to be web-size at this stage.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need to upload each image separately to ensure that they successfully attach to your application, please check your completed application to make sure all images appear.
When and where will the market take place?
The market will be open to the public from 10am-5pm on Saturday 4th May 2024.

Stallholders will have access to set-up their stalls from 8:30am on Saturday 4th May.

The market will take place across three rooms on the ground floor - Salt Rock Canteen hall, classroom SG01 and classroom SG03.
Does the venue have disabled access?
Yes, the market will take place across the ground floor level of the building, which is accessed via a ramped entrance and exit.

The venue has ground floor accessible toilets.

Please state in your application if you have any accessibility requirements, to help us best allocate your pitch location, if you are selected.
How will the Fair and my work be publicised?
Saltaire Inspired has a good marketing plan in place, based on over 15 years experience. We will market and promote the MAKE IT Bradford market as a part of the Saltaire Arts Trail programme, through the production and distribution of high quality print, a vigorous social media campaign (over 13k followers across all platforms) and by generating press releases and distributing them to appropriate media.

Stall holders will be featured in an online gallery on the Saltaire Inspired website. We will also require all stall holders to engage with the marketing and to promote their attendance at the event as much as possible through their own channels.
What is the decision making process for the applications?
All applications are subject to a selection process.

The curated selection will be made by a small team of Saltaire Inspired freelance producers, trustees and volunteers. Decisions will be made based on a desire to create a balanced and varied range of disciplines, considering quality and originality of the work submitted. A final list of between 20 to 25 stall holders will then be agreed upon and offered a place within the event.

It is important that the images you submit are representative of the quality of the work you wish to show. The panel will be able to research your website, but time is always tight and first impressions from the submitted images are crucial.

You will be contacted via a message sent through the Curatorspace messaging feature shortly after selection, and by no later than Monday 19th February 2024. All applicants who have submitted work will be contacted even if unsuccessful on this occasion.

If your application is successful, you must be able to commit to attending the market in person for the full day, and will be asked to agree to our terms of participation. Payment of the stall fee must be paid in order to secure your place within the MAKE IT Bradford market and will be invoiced for before the end of February. Fees are non-refundable for this event.

The decision of the selection panel is final and unfortunately no discussion can be entered into once the selection has been made, though we will be happy to give general feedback.
