Coinciding with the festive season, Future Tripping responds to the anxiety about the future that many people may have when entering a new year. Whilst this is a time of joy for many, it is also a time of hardship - depression, money troubles, family issues, and social pressures coincide to offer unique challenges.

How do artists respond to the complications of this time of year - and how might art serve to acknowledge both the merriment and the hardship inherent to the movement from one year to the next? Whilst still wishing to celebrate and positively affirm this time of year, MEANS nonetheless asks:

Is there value in acknowledging the mental health challenges faced at new year, and how might art provide a healthy outlet for these?
How do artists respond to anticipatory anxiety, or fear of the future?
What New Year rituals exist and how does art explore these?
How might art-making allow us to explore negative cycles of thought?
What real future issues (such as AI) do we face, and how might artists respond?

We are seeking submissions in any medium for publication in out Dec issues of MEANS magazine. Artists of all statures are invited to participate - particularly those undertaking contemporary, experimental, and conceptual forms of practice. Art, music and writing around the theme are all welcome, and all accepted artworks will be paid for being published in the magazine.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Everyone
When is the deadline?
3rd Dec 2026.
How many works can I submit?
Up to 5.
When is the delivery date?
The magazine will be released mid December.
How much does it cost?
We ask for a small submission fee of £3 - as a grassroots, independent magazine, this is merely enough to cover the time we spend engaging with the submissions we receive. Any artists who want to submit but cannot afford the fee, is welcome to submit directly for free - just send us a message. Being unable to afford the submission fee in no way affects your chance of being published.
Are there payments to artists?
Yes - artists will be paid a minimum of £20 or 5 copies of the physical magazine. Although this is not much, it represents a fair distribution of the profits the magazine will likely make.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We will be promoting the magazine and accepted artists work over our social media channels and via our mailing list.
How do you decide on proposals?
We have a panel of judges that explores each of the submissions, with a focus on originality, unique voice, and adherence to the theme.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will be in touch with accepted artists at the start of Dec, and share a pre-print version of the magazine for their approval.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
Unique, challenging, conceptual, experimental works from a diverse range of artists from a broad array of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
