MEANS magazine is a new physical magazine supporting grassroots art, music and culture. We work to support artists to share their practice through the publication of the magazine, with a focus on broadly experimental, unusual practices of all disciplines. We are seeking submissions for our newest magazine, with the theme 'PARTICIPATORY ECONOMICS'. MEANS accepts submissions in any discipline, from anywhere in the world.

We are actively seeking contemporary writing, music and art of all varieties that engages with our current theme:

PARTICIPATORY ECONOMICS: new models of creative sharing, new modes of economic distribution

Topics may include:

New methods of sharing beyond traditional capitalism

Music/art scenes as micro-economies

Art as alternative currency

Creative acts of resistance to capitalism

The problematic nature of ‘succeeding’ within a parasitic economy

Submissions may include:

Songs, Scores, Spells, Stories, Images, Articles, Performance or project documentation, manifestos...

We offer a payment of £20 for all accepted works.

Whilst we appreciate this isn’t much, we operate without external funding, and this amount represents a fair sharing of the actual income the magazine generates.

Whilst there is limited space in the physical magazine, we will endeavour to publish work on our website as well. Unfortunately, there is no fee for website published work.

Digital-only submissions that cannot be recreated in a physical magazine (such as music) are not eligible for a fee (but may be featured on our website/SM).

Although we provide no strict style guidelines, our interest is in experimental (in the broadest sense), unusual, and novel work that pushes against the boundaries of existing styles and methods.

We particularly love work that engages with notions of community and that which seeks to wield art and writing as a force for social change.

Each issue, we curate a broad church of experimental, grass-roots, underground art and writing – no style, approach, or medium is off limits.

MEANS believes in the inherent diversity of grassroots culture.

If you have anything within our theme that doesn’t fit into the above, but you feel would work either on our website or in the magazine, feel free to get in touch.
