Out of the Wood
Deadline: 16/05/2019City: Bleddfa | Region: Radnorshire | Country: United Kingdom | Charlie Hurcombe
Artists are invited to submit to participate in 'Out of the Wood' - a new temporary sculpture exhibition project set within the ancient apple orchard of The Bleddfa Centre in Radnorshire, Wales. Utilising locally coppiced wood up to 20 selected artists will each be given a single length of Birch cordwood - size approx. 6 inches diameter x 4 feet long - to utilise as they see fit for a group show commencing late August 2019.
The premise for the exhibition is a simple one; up to 20 artists are each invited to produce an individual sculpture utilising - as they see fit - one length of Birch cordwood for a group exhibition to be held in the ancient apple orchard of The Bleddfa Centre in Radnorshire, Wales.
There are no restrictions to the type of sculpture produced and this could perhaps be viewed as an opportunity to experiment and take your work in a new direction. Other materials can be used in addition to the donated cordwood. However it is important that artists are aware that the cordwood itself needs to be collected in person from Bleddfa in Radnorshire (LD7 1PA). The collection date is also planned as a day for artists to meet each other, see the exhibition site and discuss approaches etc.
In your submission, please state why you want to participate and perhaps a rough idea of how you see the cordwood being used. We do not require a definite or fully formed idea of a finished piece.
Once artists start to work on their sculpture I would hope to establish a brief ongoing dialogue of their progress. (It should also be said that any resulting sculpture deemed unsuitable in terms of causing offence or being a saftey hazard will not be installed).
The ancient apple orchard is a gently sloping site measuring 20 x 15 metres and is set within the grounds of The Bleddfa Centre. The exhibition is due to start on Saturday 24th August and will run through to late September (final closing date to be confirmed). As this is a temporary outdoors exhibition the sculptures will be subject to the elements and perhaps other instrusions (such as wildlife).
The Birch cordwood has been kindly donated by the Knighton Tree Allotment Trust and is a result of their ongoing coppicing and management of a local woodland. The exhibition will in part be used as a platform to promote the work undertaken by the Knighton Tree Allotment Trust which is run by volunteers.
The cordwood set aside for this project was felled in Spring 2018 and has seasoned under cover in the open air.
