A digital exhibition opportunity for moving image work to be shown online as part of Photo Fringe 2020, the ninth edition of the open-access photography festival, running 3-31 October 2020. Photo Fringe invites emerging artists worldwide to respond to the question: “How can photography make a difference?”

Photo Fringe is open to everyone and everybody's invited. 

Although we expect some self-curated exhibitions to go ahead with social-distancing measures in Brighton & Hove venues, a large part of Photo Fringe 2020 will be accessed online, including the exhibitions of work selected for our OPEN20 SOLO award, plus OPEN20 Moving Image and OPEN20 Young Photographers showcases.

For the Photo Fringe OPEN20 Moving Image, works submitted by early-career photographers and moving image artists will be considered by a panel of influential professionals:

Joe Hill, Director, Towner Eastbourne
Clare Strand, Artist
Mita Suri, Film Programme Producer, Sheffield Doc Fest
 
The panel will select up to ten moving image works (each no more than ten minutes long) to be presented and promoted on the Photo Fringe 2020 festival website.

This year there will be no physical exhibition for the OPEN20 Moving Image or printed catalogue. Photo Fringe will coordinate digital events with the artists to support the programme.
 
What are the selectors looking for?
 
Early career artists are encouraged to enter moving image work they consider to be in some way photographic, or informed by photography and photographic practice.
 
The selectors are interested in seeing well resolved, exciting and innovative work that responds to the festival’s core question: “How can photography make a difference?”
 
Eligibility 

We define early career as a practitioner who is just beginning to gain recognition.
 
Entrants should be over 18 years of age.
 
Submissions must be of an existing body of work that has not been previously presented in an exhibition (this can be graduate work if it has not been shown outside a University or art college).

Photo Fringe is a registered charity based in Brighton, UK that supports early-career photographers and lens-based artists, showcases new talent and enables all kinds of people to enjoy and experiment with photography. Every two years Photo Fringe designs and delivers one of the largest photographic festivals of its kind in the UK. Photo Fringe develops new ways of seeing together. It is open to everyone and everybody’s invited. 
 
 
Photo Fringe festival runs in parallel to the internationally acclaimed Photoworks Festival (formerly Brighton Photo Biennial) and is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Brighton & Hove City Council, Worthing & Adur District Council, Metro Imaging Ltd and Colourstream.
 
Submission Fees

The entry fee this year has been reduced to £10. You will be taken to the payment page after making your submission.

Photo Fringe recognises that many practitioners are suffering financial hardship and that for some even a reduced fee may not be affordable. Up to ten bursaries are available to those for whom the opportunity would be valuable, but feel they can’t afford the fee. Please email Claire Wearn, Festival Director, clairewearn@photofringe.org if you believe a bursary would be suitable for you.  

About the exhibition space

Photo Fringe 2020 will dedicate a space on its new festival website to exhibit the OPEN20 Moving Image. Launching on 3 October and running for at least one year.

Exhibition Delivery

All selected artworks must be made available to the Festival Director no later than 12 noon on Friday 11 September.
 
Selected works will be required to include appropriate captioning (in English language).

Photo Fringe has asked a panel of four selectors to consider the works against the festival's core question: "how can photography make a difference?"
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
You will be notified by the Photo Fringe team with details of the timeline and how to submit your work. Selected artists will be asked to sign an agreement to allow Photo Fringe to share your work and promote it.
What are the selection criteria?
1. in what way is the work resolved, innovative and exciting?
2. In what way does the work respond to our call to action: how can photography make a difference?
3. in what way is it representative of photography and moving image in 2020?
4. Is the work under 10 minutes in duration.
