Artist Residency and development space at The Old Courts supported by TERM art classes

The Old Courts is offering a dynamic residency space opportunity supported by TERM Art Classes, for North West based artists or those with links to Wigan borough to create, experiment, and develop their work.

We invite artists from all disciplines to apply, with a focus on those interested in exploring new ideas, engaging with the community, and pushing creative boundaries.

This is a pilot scheme to see how The Old Courts can help support visual artists so feedback after the residency will help future programmes. 

Programme Overview:

  • Artists can apply for residency without cost or fees.
  • The residency slots between 2 - 4 weeks available in the following slots - please indicate which one you'd like to apply for, and how long (indicate a few if flexible) : 
  • 27th Oct 2025 - 21st Dec 2025
  • 1st Dec 2025 - 21st Dec 2025


There will be a maximum of four Artists in Residence accommodated at any given time. Applications have already begun, and some artists are starting in July.

Artists must be committed to using the space consistently throughout the week, whether during the day or evenings, to ensure consistent progress on their project. At least 1 day a week

Access to studio: Monday – Wednesday 8 am – 9 pm, Thursday - Saturday 8 am – 11 am

Artists are encouraged to share their progress with the public through final exhibitions, talks, invitations to open studios or informal studio visits.

The residency is geared towards visual artists looking to develop new work with no restrictions on the medium or discipline.

The programme encourages interaction with fellow artists in residence, fostering a creative community that supports networking and idea exchange.

Artists are expected to work safely and adhere to the health and safety codes provided.

Opportunity for artist development through The Old Courts, outline any of your needs such as; marketing, funding support etc and we can see what could be supported.

Space and Resources:

The Old Courts will provide a studio space which includes the following resources:

  • Natural and artificial lighting.
  •  Chairs or stools for working.
  •  Ample work surfaces and tables.
  •  Power outlets.
  •  Sink / water source for cleaning materials.
  •  Shelves for storing materials and works.
  •  Ventilation: Windows. Space in the back courtyard can be used for spray paint or other noxious materials.
  •  Wi-Fi access for research or communication needs.
  •  Wall space for displaying or creating hanging artworks.
  • Drying racks for artworks.
  •  Individual workstations for each resident.
  •  Access to bins for recycling and general waste.
  •  Safety Equipment: First aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency protocols.
  •  Access to Toilets.
  •  Key Access for flexibility (see allocated access times)
  •  Log Book to check-in and check-out for security and safety.
  • A safety induction upon arrival to ensure proper use of the space.
  •  Break-out communal area that can be used for exhibiting
  •  2 Rooms: Room 1 (divided into 2 studios) measures 5200mm x 4200mm. Room 2  (divided into 2 studios)  measures 7500mm x 3500mm. Artists will each be allocated a space.
  • Please note no naked flames to be used in the studios.
  • Also note that spaces are not private and are technically open to public during opening hours so do not leave valuables on site.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Any artists over the age of 18 who are able to travel regularly to Wigan and want to develop a specific project or change of art direction
When is the deadline?
The deadline is 30th Aug but earlier applications will be reviewed for the August residency start so sooner the better.
How much does it cost?
The residency is free to apply for and no costs to the artist for the studio.
Are there payments to artists?
This is a pilot scheme using empty space in The Old Courts to engage visual artists. Unfortunately there is no fee at this stage but we can negotiate ticket sales for workshops and works can be sold at open studios or exhibitions in residency
Is there a private view / opening?
If you want one.
Does the location have disabled access?
Unfortunately this is an old building with issues around access. There is a single step on entry to the space and 2 steps to access the toilets. There are accessible toilets in another part of the building so get in touch with your requirements.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Yes publicity is provided with added support of wanted with things like marketing, show reels etc.
Do I need to be present?
Yes at least once a week but more is preferable to have a communal atmosphere.
How do you decide on proposals?
We are reviewing project quality, need for the space and professional support, availability to use the space.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will contact you with artist agreements and set you up with marketing and professional development managers. You will arrange a safety briefing and key exchange with The Old Courts.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
Proposals that are developing existing work in new interesting ways, proposals that are looking to connect with the community, proposals that can’t be done without a dedicated space, keenness to share works with public (however you like) and to interact with fellow residents
