Tetley’s Beer and the original home of Tetley’s Brewery, The Tetley, now a centre for contemporary art and learning, have launched a new scheme to support emerging talent in Leeds. The year-long programme will support the development of artists through a bespoke programme of mentoring and development and hopes to foster a new generation of artists and help provide opportunities for artists in Leeds and Yorkshire.

Who are we looking for?

The selected artists will demonstrate a strong direction in their practice, but have reached a pivotal moment in their careers when they need external support and recognition to move on. We imagine that the artists we will select will have exhibited in artist run spaces, but not yet shown in publically funded galleries.

No formal qualifications are necessary to apply for this scheme, but we will expect to see a body of work and several years of independent practice. There is no specification of where artists need to be based to take part in this opportunity, however there is no travel budget available and activity will take place at The Tetley, Leeds.

The Tetley is committed to equal opportunities and to Arts Council England’s Creative Case for Diversity. We are actively seeking a diverse group of Associate Artists, not only across protected characteristics, but also of skills sets, art forms and interests.

Artists will be selected by a panel including Bryony Bond, Artistic Director, The Tetley; Laurence Sillars, Head of Exhibitions, Henry Moore Institute and Rehana Zaman, artist.

What will the programme do?

This 12 month programme will focus on honing your existing practice, developing your networks and increasing your professional experience. How this is achieved will be discussed between the selected artists and the team at The Tetley. Each artist will have a budget of £1,500 to spend in discussion with The Tetley. This budget can be used to pay for a guest mentor, curatorial visit, or on developing work, all reasonable proposals that support artistic and professional development will be considered.

In addition to this budget, selected artists will be able to use The Tetley’s residency studio (durations and dates are flexible and will be agreed between all the selected artists and The Tetley) and produce at least one public event over the 12 months (additional budget is available for this). Associate Artists will also receive mentoring from Tetley staff and artists in the exhibition programme.

What is the timescale and the commitment from selected artists?

This programme is entirely flexible and responsive to the selected artists’ needs. There is no specified time requirement, the programme will be defined in collaboration with all the artists at the outset and so the programme is flexible to fit around any other commitments.

The programme will be planned collectively in early September, provisional dates for this planning session are 6 & 7 September.

The programme will run until 31 August 2019. What are the outcomes from the programme? This is the first programme like this at The Tetley, as such the programme will run as a pilot and learning from all participants will help inform any future developments. For the individual artists involved we hope it will make a significant impact and help take their career to the next level.

How to apply:

Deadline: 9am on Monday 6 August.

● A CV (no more than 2 sides of A4, including your full name, address, email and a telephone number).

● A brief summary of why you think this is a good time for you to undertake a scheme like this and how you would want it to develop your practice and career (no more than one side of A4).

● Up to 10 images of your work, or up to 5 minutes clip of video, a website link is fine.

● A completed equal opportunities form. Interviews with shortlisted artists will take place on Wednesday 29 August, those shortlisted will be informed no later than Friday 24 August.

Unusually, due to the nature of the call out, we will offer feedback on all applications if requested by the applicant.

Sponsored by Tetley’s

One of Britain’s oldest and best loved ales was brewed in Leeds at Tetley’s Brewery for nearly 200 years and has a strong and proud history that is synonymous with the city. Tetley’s still lives by its founder Joshua Tetley’s mantra ‘quality pays’ and centuries on still produces its signature double strain yeast, giving Tetley’s beers their unique taste. In 2018, Tetley’s is looking to the future and is rolling out a new logo and branding, a new interpretation of the Tetley family’s coat of arms, using symbols inspired by their previous business as maltsters and used in the company’s original logo for the first 100 years of its existence.
