In 2024, our Gallery is looking for Artists who highlight issues about fast fashion and the impact this subject has on the environment within their work.

It’s estimated that more than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. That amount produces nearly 50 tonnes of carbon emissions: the same as driving 162,000 miles in a car. In one month alone, the carbon footprint of new clothes bought in the UK was greater than flying a plane around the world 900 times.

Textile production contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined.

Buy the Kilo Art Gallery is based in our zero waste shop in Tynemouth, Tyne & Wear. Co-founder, Jackie Sewell, is a plastic activist and Artist whose work focuses on the detrimental effects of plastic pollution around us. Our Art Gallery has seen over 40 exhibitions by environmental Artists from across the UK and Europe. The closing date for submissions is 30th January 2024.

The chosen Artists will exhibit for a month, with the opportunity to sell, paying 30% commission to the shop. The artist is responsible for getting their work to the shop when it is their time to exhibit and the Gallery will pay the cost to return the work to the artist. They can post it and we will hang as instructed.

The space is 150cm square, the artist can exhibit one piece or several to fit into that space.  Artists must have their own Artist insurance.

We do not accept film, light, sound/AV work due to lack of electricity access in the space.
