The Horton is commissioning panoramic artworks inspired by the history of music therapy at Horton Hospital, as part of our project The Music Of Life.

The Horton Arts Centre is commissioning a minimum of two and a maximum of three panoramic artworks for the internal window niches along its main corridor, inspired by the history of music therapy at Horton Hospital.

The music therapy programme began at Horton in 1955, the first of its kind in Europe, and the approach developed there became the foundation of the clinical specialism practised today.

The Horton is the hospital’s former chapel, and the space converted for music therapy is now our performance space.

The commissioned artworks will be displayed in the corridor beside it. The selected artist will be presented with rich visual, sonic and textual source materials. 

This project is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Dates:

• Deadline for submission of initial applications 30 August.
• Three shortlisted artists will be notified 3 September.
• Selected artist commissioned 17–18 September.
• Installation 16-18 November.

Fees:

£4700-£7050 artist/design fee, (£2350 per artwork) inclusive of expenses, plus up to £1,500 for production, materials, reproduction, mounting and installation.

Three shortlisted artists will be paid £250 each to develop a concept; one of them is then commissioned to make the artworks.

We welcome applications from artists and designers working in collage, print, drawing, painting, photography and photogravure, and from anyone whose work might suit the brief. The artwork proposed does not have to be 2D.
