The Next Thing Moving Image Award 2025 is now open for submissions. Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is inviting recent graduates of UK fine art courses and alternative art school students whose practice has a focus towards moving image to enter this exciting opportunity.

Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre’s moving image award is now in its eighth year, and we would like to invite recent graduates from UK fine art courses and alternative art school students whose practice has a focus on moving image to enter.  

The aim is to discover the best video/film/moving image artists emerging from UK art schools and offer them a high-quality professional development opportunity.

The ten most promising artists discovered through the submission process will be given the chance to showcase their work in the Moving Image Gallery in a showreel together with the other participants from 15 November 2025- March 2026.

The overall winner will be awarded £250 in order to further their personal practice.

Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is committed to investing in the next generation of Moving Image artists.

Since its inception, in 2013, our Moving Image Gallery has showcased works from emerging and established artists such as Juntae T.J. Hwang, Rachel Maclean, Mark Leckey, Sejla Kameric, David Blandy & Larry Achiampong, Aslan Gaisumov.

The deadline for applications is 6th October 2025.

The 10 selected films will be announced on 20th October 2025

To apply, things to keep in mind:

  • Please send a link to 1 work that best represents your practice.
  • Please remember to label the video file with name and title of piece.
  • If you use a password to view the video, make sure it’s correct and working
  • Do not send a link to your website
  • This opportunity is for single channel films only and they must be between 3 -8 mins. Any films under or over this time frame will not be considered.
  • Please submit an artist’s statement (500 words maximum); It should include information about your artistic practice.
  • Please add a description of the work you have submitted as part of your application. We are also happy to accept all detailed written information as a video or voice recorded format.
  • Do not re-apply each year with the same film
  • Please include the UK university you attended and the date you attended it, or your application will not be viewed.
  • Please don’t enter if you have entered the Next Thing Award before and got into the top ten
  • Please don’t enter if you are an established artist
  • Please don’t enter if you do not hold a UK bank account. The winner’s fee needs to be paid into a UK bank account

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
You are eligible to apply for this opportunity if you graduated or are graduating at BA, MA or PhD or have attended an alternative art school in the years 2023, 2024, 2025. Artwork must have a fine art practice orientation.
When is the deadline?
The deadline for applications is 10 am - 6 October 2025.
We regret that Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre is unable to respond to unsuccessful applications individually. Selection will take place in October and only successful applicants will be informed. If you have not had a response from us by 17 October, please assume your application has not been unsuccessful on this occasion.
How many works can I submit?
1 work per person – 3-8 mins in length

When is the delivery date?
More information about this will be emailed to successful applicants, they will be asked to send the curator a downloadable link to their video via WeTransfer, Dropbox etc.
