VIDEOHOOK-UPS accepts pitches for articles concerning experimental film and video games. A collective for the unconventional in visual media, VIDEO HOOK-UPS seeks to motivate and inspire contemporary work through the exchange of art and ideas.

The theme for articles this spring is MUSIC. Potential essay topics include, but are not limited to:

  • music video storylines, themes, or techniques
  • music documentaries
  • the visual music genre
  • soundtracks
  • rhythm games


The deadline for article proposals is April 19th, 2019. Articles will go live through May and June 2019.

Current rates: accepted article pitch authors will be paid for a completed essay ($50 per 500 words) meeting VH-U editorial approval. Any length acceptable. Video tutorials explaining specific techniques are also welcome.

Some further topics of interest to VH-U you are welcome to explore in addition to or instead of the spring/summer 2019 theme:

  • social media and video
  • interviews with filmmakers
  • projection mapping
  • machinima, Second Life
  • VJing
  • video synthesis
  • bridging the gap between cinema and video art
  • organization and search of media assets through stock or Creative Commons websites

One essay per seasonal submission period.

It is free to submit.
Are there payments to artists?
$50 per 500 words, meeting VH-U editorial approval. Any length acceptable.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
The articles will be promoted across VIDEO HOOK-UPS social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
How do you decide on proposals?
The VIDEO HOOK-UPS board will review every submission to ensure it fits the theme of the season, in this case music, and meets the criteria we are looking for for high-quality writing.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
You will be contacted by email. You will receive payment in May 2019 and your article will go live in May or June 2019.
