CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #22: Naomi Aderonke

Naomi is a burgeoning multidisciplinary research and narrative led artist who has developed their illustrative and narrative skills past digital art and traditional print into 3D work. Exploring ceramics and textile through tufting, Naomi looks at the form, colours and materials used, not just the image, to create the stories they want to tell. Naomi is a storyteller who thrives on folk, history and culture; looking into ways of exploring that through artistic objects.

"My project is called the Mini Minoan collection and is based on the Minoan pottery I saw in Crete. My aim is to develop a series of ceramic pots with a mixture of traditional Kamare and modern forms. The pots will be decorated with imagery inspired by the landscape surrounding Crete alongside my interpretations of folklore from my Yorkshire home. This project expands on my previous ceramic and tufted textile works, developed as part of my Monster Mask series which merges imagery of historical and literary monsters with West African mask making.

Originally trained as an illustrator, I have developed my skills beyond digital art and traditional print into sculptural work through ceramics. In this way, I consider how the form, colours and materials used contribute to the overall narractive of the work. I have previously been in receipt of a DYCP award from Arts Council England as well as a micro bursary from The Art House Wakefield. The CuratorSpace bursary will enable me to continue my exploration of ceramics to develop my practice further."
