The deadline for this opportunity has passed, and no more submissions are being accepted. Click here to have a look at other opportunities listed on CuratorSpace.

We launched Garage in late 2022 and have hosted a variety of exhibitions since then, including hung work, sculpture and installations including audio and video. Garage runs on a not-for-profit basis and we don’t charge for the use of the space (other than a nominal. negotiable charge of £50 to cover costs). We’re now planning a series of group shows for 2024.

We’re looking for curators or curator-artists for a group show as part of our 2024 offer - we’re planning to host several shows between March and December (dates flexible) – and also into 2025.

If you support our ethos - to provide an opportunity for artists who are just starting out (irrespective of age), haven't had a London show before and are producing socially-conscious art - let us know how you'd go about putting together an exhibition.  We’re looking for groups of at least three artists.

Previous curators have worked creatively to make the most of the space, which is relatively small: the gallery area itself is 7m x 2.5m with about 10m of wall hanging space; there are two freestanding boards (around 2m x 2m) which provide extra space/partitions.  We’d like to encourage experimentation and will give curators free rein to use the space creatively to suit the work.  You’re welcome to come and visit the space and discuss options and ideas.

We work on a primarily invitation-only basis for visitors, but we’ve found that this generates a good footfall for exhibitions 3 – 4 days in length, including a weekend and an evening private view. All our shows have been well-attended and received, and we work with curators to maximise publicity using our lists, social media and our website as well as their own channels.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Anyone who meets our criteria, and can put together and work with a group of artists, including 'emerging' artists to create a show in our space.
When is the deadline?
Friday 29th December 2023.
When is the delivery date?
We plan to host several shows during 2024 and we can agree a date for your show (3-4 days) with you.
When do I need to set up and take down the show?
Again, we can agree details with you but we usually aim for a maximum of 4 days ahead of the show to start taking delivery of works and giving access to the space to set up, and up to 4 days after the show for collection and take-down.
How much does it cost?
We charge a nominal fee (currently £50) to cover our costs; this is negotiable. If you are planning to sell works (which is fine) then we may ask for up to 10% of sales but again this is negotiable. Overall we operate on a not-for-profit basis, and our priority is supporting artists and putting on great shows, but we do aim to cover costs.
Is there a private view / opening?
We usually have a private view on the Friday evening, but we can agree details with you.
What are the exhibition opening hours and do I need to be present?
We ask that you arrange for someone to be present whenever the exhibition is open. As a minimum we'd like to open Friday - Sunday (times to be agreed), plus the evening private view. We could also open on the Thursday - we can agree days and times to suit you.
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We use instagram, facebook, our website and local WhatsApp groups. We'd ask you to support publicity too.
How do you decide on proposals?
We (Jenny & Jim, the two owners of the space) review all proposals and assess how they meet our criteria and then how they would fit into our programme for the next 12 months or so. We'll then create a shortlist.
What happens if my proposal is shortlisted?
We'll be in touch with you to discuss dates and invite you to come and meet us and see the space. We can do this remotely by Zoom/Teams if necessary.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
A short written proposal (max 1 side A4) please, plus links to other work/shows that you've been involved in.
