GREENy bastARTs, in partnership with the Building Centre and the London Climate Week, invites artists, designers, researchers, and activists to apply for the second edition of KINDFIRE: an eco-artivist exhibition and public program exploring the urgent environmental and social questions shaping our shared future.

The 2027 edition will focus even more on ecological art, transforming The Building Centre into a space for artistic encounter, public dialogue, learning and collective climate action.

About the project

KINDFIRE is a bold eco-artivist exhibition and public programme taking place during London Climate Action Week 2027. Conceived by the GREENy bastARTs, an international eco-artivist collective of artists, scientists, engineers, researchers, storytellers, and activists, KINDFIRE will transform The Building Centre for the second time into a living ecosystem where art, science, community, technology, and activism meet.

At its core, KINDFIRE is an art exhibition. The gallery becomes the emotional and intellectual anchor for the entire event, offering a multisensory journey through the interconnected urgencies shaping our planetary future. Visitors encounter works that make environmental challenges tangible, personal, and actionable, while the surrounding programme deepens understanding through dialogue, reflection, and collective imagination.

Alongside the exhibition, KINDFIRE will include a public programme of artist talks, expert conversations, screenings, workshops and participatory sessions.  

During the 10-day event, all artists are required to be fully vegan and act in a way that is as low-carbon as possible, as this event and all GREENy bastARTs projects consider the impact of this action on the planet throughout the event.

Six environmental urgencies

KINDFIRE 2027 will be organised around six interconnected environmental urgencies:

1. Energy transition
Clean energy, sustainable transport, energy justice and the infrastructures transforming the way we live.

2. Overconsumption
Circular economies, waste reduction, repair, reuse, material culture and creative approaches to ocean-recovered materials or “trashure”.

3. Food and the kindness revolution
Compassionate consumption, food systems, food justice, biodiversity, animal ethics and the social and ecological consequences of what we eat.

4. Climate social justice
The unequal effects of climate change, environmental racism, displacement, colonial histories, access to resources and the experiences of climate-vulnerable communities.

5. Interconnectedness
Ecological and social systems as interdependent webs, including more-than-human perspectives, biomaterials, bio-inspired design and multispecies relationships.

6. How climate change affects me
Personal experience, youth perspectives, climate anxiety, agency, hope, care and the possibility of meaningful individual and collective action.

We welcome work that addresses one or more of these urgencies, as well as practices that reveal the connections between them.

Who can apply

We welcome applications from:

• Artists and collectives working in any medium that is vegan and as respectful of the environment as possible.
• Emerging, mid-career and established practitioners.
• Artists working across installation, sculpture, painting, photography, video, sound, performance, digital media, participatory practice, socially engaged art, textiles, bio-art and interdisciplinary forms.
• Applicants based in the UK or internationally.
• We are particularly focused on applications from practitioners whose work engages with environmental responsibility, social justice, community knowledge and new forms of ecological imagination.

What we are looking for

We are seeking works or proposals that:

• Explore climate change through innovative artistic, scientific or technological approaches.
• Address ecological systems, biodiversity, materials, energy, food or consumption.
• Engage with climate justice and the unequal distribution of environmental harm.
• Consider the relationship between human and more-than-human life.
• Create opportunities for dialogue, participation, reflection or collective learning.
• Offer new ways of imagining care, resilience, adaptation and climate action.
• Connect with one or more of KINDFIRE’s six environmental urgencies.

What selected artists receive

Selected artists will be invited to participate in KINDFIRE 2027 at The Building Centre in London.

The exhibition package includes:

• Inclusion in a collective exhibition during 17–27 June 2027.
• Presentation of the selected artwork or project at The Building Centre.
• Consideration for inclusion in the KINDFIRE public program and COMPETITION for a free spot for next year's event.
• Professional documentation of the exhibition.
• Inclusion in the exhibition catalogue.
• Promotion through GREENy bastARTs and KINDFIRE communication channels.
• Opportunities to connect with artists, researchers, activists, educators and climate-focused organisations.
• Consideration for artist talks, workshops, screenings, or participatory sessions, where relevant. We will try our very best to accommodate each artist for workshops and talks.
• Participation in the public programme will depend on the nature of the work, the final programme and available resources.   

If you host a workshop or talk, 25% of the ticket amount goes back to GREENy bastARTs to pay for the weekend, the vegan cafe, and catalogue production.

Participation and contribution fee

KINDFIRE is independently organised and self-funded by GREENy bastARTs. Artist contributions help us cover the costs of hiring The Building Centre, exhibition production, installation, technical support, documentation, communication and public programming.

The application fee is 20 pounds, and there is a contribution fee of 350 pounds for selected artists. This is a means of making the event self-sustaining; there will be no financial gain.

The contribution will cover:

• Exhibition space and venue hire.
• Installation and technical coordination.
• Exhibition administration.
• Professional documentation.
• Catalogue and communication materials plus the GREENy bastARTs pin!
• Exhibition format and practical considerations
• The exhibition will be presented in a professional public venue in central London. Applicants should consider the practical requirements of displaying their work, including:
  • Installation and deinstallation requirements.
  • Lighting, sound, electricity or internet needs.
  • Technical equipment.
  • Fragility and public safety.
  • Shipping, transport and insurance.
  • Whether the work requires supervision or audience participation.
  • Environmental impact of materials and transportation.
  • Artists are responsible for delivering or arranging the delivery of their work to the venue unless another arrangement is agreed in writing.

Because KINDFIRE is an environmentally focused project, applicants are encouraged to consider low-impact production, reusable materials, local fabrication, repair, circularity, and responsible transportation.

Submission guidelines

Please submit the following:

• Up to five artworks or one project proposal. (Only one work per artist will be selected and shown.)
• A short artist statement of up to 300 words.
• A brief biography of up to 150 words.
• Links to relevant work: website, article, online folder…
• Artwork details, including title, date, medium and dimensions.
• Installation instructions and technical requirements, where applicable.
• A short 1-minute 9:16 video introducing yourself and your practice and explaining how the work connects to one or more of the six KINDFIRE urgencies. If your work is selected, we intend to post your video on our Instagram account. If you wish us not to do so, please state it clearly in your application. 
• An indication of whether you would be interested in contributing to a talk, workshop, screening or participatory activity.

• Artwork delivery and installation: 15-16 June 2027
• Private View: 17 June 2027, 5–8 pm

• Public programme: 26–27 June 2027, subject to final confirmation
• Finissage: 27 June 2027, afternoon.
• Artwork collection: 28 June 2027

The exhibition dates are planned to coincide with London Climate Action Week 2027, which is currently listed as taking place from 19–27 June 2027.

Final dates and programming will be confirmed by GREENy bastARTs and may be adjusted in coordination with the venue and London Climate Action Week calendar.

Selection process

Incomplete applications may not be considered. Applications will be reviewed by the GREENy bastARTs curatorial and organising team. Selection will consider:

• The artist’s sustainability efforts.
• The strength and relevance of the artistic practice.
• The relationship between the proposed work and KINDFIRE’s themes.
• Originality, experimentation and clarity of approach.
• Feasibility within the exhibition space and available resources.
• Diversity of perspectives, disciplines, geographies and experiences.
• The potential of the work to encourage reflection, dialogue or action.
• GREENy bastARTs aims to create an exhibition that brings together different forms of knowledge and avoids a single or uniform understanding of environmental urgency.
