Corridor8, in partnership with Leeds Arts University, invites proposals from an early career writer to respond to a forthcoming solo exhibition by Nicola Dale titled 'Figurehead.' This residency is designed for an early career writer to develop their work in a supportive organisational setting, in conversation with artists, curators and editors. In Autumn 2018, Dale will visit Rome to study historical representations of Saint Jerome, patron saint of libraries, as the basis for an exhibition in the newly built, dedicated arts library at Leeds Arts University. A writer is invited to respond critically or creatively (or both) to the project as it unfolds.

What You Will Do

The writer will spend 2 days at Leeds Arts University during the installation (dates TBC) and produce a 1,500-2,000-word piece of writing in a form appropriate to the residency (i.e. a range of styles, from essay-style to experimental, will be considered). The final text will be showcased on the Corridor8 website and included in a printed publication collaboratively produced with d.ust design collective, to be launched in January 2019.

Accommodation

Leeds Arts University will provide a residency space for the writer on agreed dates during the installation period (TBC). Leeds Arts University will cover one night's accommodation for the writer plus travel expenses, if required.

Selection Process

Applicants must be based in the North of England, at an early stage of their career and have a genuine interest in working closely with artists, curators and editors to evolve their writing practice. Proposals will be evaluated for their suitability to the residency and the candidates’ quality of writing. The selection panel comprises Lara Eggleton (Managing Editor, Corridor8) and Catriona McAra (University Curator, Leeds Arts University).

Fee

£500 + expenses (travel with receipts + one night's accommodation if required).
