Deadline: 05/07/2026

City: London  |  Country: United Kingdom  |  Deep Focus

Report this?

Deep Focus is looking for submissions of moving image works under 10 minutes for the autumn/winter program, reflecting on the Forces of Attraction that intervene on and regulate both ordinary and extraordinary experience. Screenings will be held in October, November and December 2026 at the RHB Cinema, Goldsmiths, London, UK.

«Opposites attract, identicals repel.»

We want to see how moving image as a practice can be used to describe but also interpret this theme, to raise questions about connection and repulsion, what pulls people and things together and how tension is created.

Screenings will be held in October, November and December 2026 at the RHB Cinema, Goldsmiths, London, UK.

About us

Deep Focus is an artist-led initiative that aims to provide a platform for contemporary moving image and to add to the contemporary discourse by showcasing various forms, aesthetics, voices and perspectives.

Through periodic screening events, we wish to provide networking opportunities for artists working in Moving Image and to introduce contemporary Artist Films to a wider audience.

Deep Focus events are free and open to all. Our members are, in alphabetical order, Jael Arazi, Shira Bar, Ursula Pelczar, Dhiren Shingadia and Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis. We operate as a volunteer collective.

Submissions and Eligibility

We cannot accept multiple submissions for the same open call. Only one work by the same artist can be shown within a single screening. However, artists may submit again to a different open call.

Can the same film be shown more than once in the Deep Focus programme?

Yes, but the same film may only be screened again after a minimum period of six months.

Different works by the same artist can be shown once at every theme, but not more often than every three months or with a minimum of two screening events in between.

How long must an artist wait before showing another work in a future screening?

Artists may be selected again for future screenings, including differently themed editions, subject to curatorial decisions and scheduling.

Can older works be submitted?

There is no restriction on how old a work can be. Also, artists at any stage in their career can submit their work (emerging, mid-career and established).

Can collectives or collaborative works apply?
Yes, there are no restrictions on collaborative films or multiple authorship.

Are international submissions accepted?

Yes. International submissions are welcome and encouraged, although priority is given to artists who are able to attend the screening in person.

Are previously exhibited or screened works eligible?

Yes. Works do not need to be premiered at Deep Focus. However, the same film can only be shown within the Deep Focus programme once every six months.

What are you looking for in the artwork description?

The description would ideally contextualise the artwork by touching on the subject themes or research interests and relating it (even loosely) to the open call theme.

How should I phrase my artist bio/statement that is requested in the submission form?

It should include anything that’s relevant and helps contextualise the artwork further, we are less interested in the CV style accolades and more in the research interests that drive your work.

What should be considered regarding trigger/content warnings?

Any potentially sensitive content, this may include, but is not limited to, depictions of violence, sexual content, abuse, self-harm, mental health distress, eating disorders, substance use, flashing or strobing imagery, loud or sudden sound, or other material that could be distressing or physically triggering for some audiences.

Providing content or trigger warnings does not affect the selection of works. These notices allow us to present the programme responsibly and accessibly, while respecting both the integrity of the work and the wellbeing of viewers.

Work Requirements

  • All forms of experimental Moving Image work can be accepted. Works must be intended as artworks. Commercial works or works made for commercial purposes are not eligible.
  • Works can be excerpted or shown in full. Both options are accepted.
  • There is currently a maximum of 10 min limit for each work. Please indicate clearly if you are submitting an excerpt.
  • Submitted works must be complete and ready for public viewing.

Technical Specifications

  • Some venues, including where the screenings take place, are equipped with a 5.1 sound system. Other venues will provide stereo sound as a minimum.
  • Artists should always confirm their sound format when submitting and indicate if a 5.1 or 7.1 version is available. Where possible, we aim to present works in 5.1.
  • There are no restrictions on aspect ratio, however the maximum playback resolution currently available is 1920 x 1080.
  • We are not able to support anything above that at this time. We ask all artists to send their final files in FHD where possible, to avoid resizing or unfavourable framing.

Fees, Funding and Support

  • It is free to participate in the Deep Focus programme.
  • Deep Focus is a volunteer-run initiative and currently operates without funding. We welcome suggestions for potential funding opportunities.
  • Travel and accommodation costs currently cannot be covered. However, participation letters can be provided on request to support individual applications for funding.

Selection Process

  • Works are selected based on relevance to the theme, originality and suitability within the overall curatorial framework of each screening. Films are selected from the periodic open call submissions, as well as by direct invitation.
  • Selections are made by members of the Deep Focus team.
  • Applicants will be notified approximately two weeks before the first screening date in each series.

Unfortunately, due to capacity limitations of the volunteer-run team, feedback cannot be provided.

Screening Format and Participation

  • Screenings are in person only. Some moments may be shared live via Instagram.
  • Artists are strongly encouraged to attend where possible. One of the core aims of Deep Focus is to build community and foster conversation. It is important that artists attend the event as these screenings are designed as a shared space for dialogue, exchange and community building between artists and audiences.
  • Each screening will be followed by a short Q&A, followed by informal discussion afterwards, usually at a nearby pub.
