Punk/Jazz
Deadline: 03/09/2023City: York | Region: North Yorkshire | Country: United Kingdom | Navigators Art & Performance
York-based collective Navigators Art & Performance invites visual artists living in and around York (UK) to submit work for an exhibition entitled "PUNK/JAZZ".
The show is scheduled for installation on Thursday the 19th October between 10 am and 3 pm.
The removal date will be shortly after New Year (TBC).
It will be split between two well-patronised bar venues (one small, one average size) and the launch night will be either on Saturday 21st October or Sunday 22nd October (TBC)
This callout is open to all, whatever your level of experience in making art. We encourage submissions from all areas of society.
The theme:
'Positive vibes' or 'no future'? Punk and Jazz will seem incompatible to some, but there are connections. We look at them as two sides of a coin.
Both arose from comparable social and cultural conditions. Both can be controversial, uncompromising and confrontational. Both can be healing.
The best of both is groundbreaking musically and philosophically, seeking to push the limits of what is possible.
Of course, some of the differences are interesting too!
How does the music channel your own feelings? Can your art reflect all or some of this?
We want the show as a whole to be a creative exploration of the two genres, so be imaginative with your interpretation and response. Try to avoid cliché and stereotypes!
T&C:
Artists must transport their own work and be available to install and take down on the specified dates (times TBC) or arrange an alternative.
We'd expect to see all artists at the launch event.
If we choose your work, we'll ask you to commit to sharing promotional activities and responsibilities such as online posts and physical flyering.
We aren't funded, so we'll also ask you to share the cost of printing some flyers and related expenses. This shouldn't be more than the price of three or four pints each.
Please note there's no submission fee, because that sucks, and we won't charge you commission on your sales or claim any rights to your work.
The venue will take 25% commission though, so factor that in when deciding on your selling price.
Follow @navigatorsart on Instagram and/or Facebook. On Facebook that's FOLLOW please, not just Like. We're trying to raise the profile of our artists.
All contributing artists will be featured on our website in due course.

Note:
The venues aren't equipped to show sculptures, installations or work on screen, but artists are welcome to make enquiries about submitting non-2D work if they wish.
We'd like some words about how you relate to our theme and why you chose Punk or Jazz. If there's crossover, please explain how and why.
