Following with our year’s theme of Hospitality and the relationship between guest and host, East Street Arts is delighted to be partnering with Bilbaoarte (Spain) to offer two Leeds-based members the opportunity to spend a month in Bilbao, Spain.

[Part One: Leeds - Bilbao]

THIS OPPORTUNITY IS FOR EAST STREET ARTS MEMBERS

This residency is Part One of a collaboration between East Street Arts, pocagallery and Bilbaoarte to create an opportunity for exchange and opportunities for artists in Bilbao and Leeds. Two artists from Leeds will be selected to spend a month in Bilbao this summer 2015. 

Bilbaoarte is an arts centre focusing on providing resources and infrastructure for emerging artists to develop new work through programme of residencies, exhibitions, screenings, workshops and seminars. The two East Street Arts members will live with two local artists currently working at Bilbaoarte and have access to all Bilbaoarte facilities, including printing and sculpture workshops, and receive a first hand experience of the Bilbao art scene.

This opportunity is an extension of the collaboration between East Street Arts and pocagallery in Portugalete. pocagallery will also be available to the artists as a testing studio space, and the four artists will be invited to showcase their work at the gallery at the end of the residency.

The aim of this opportunity is to promote an exchange ideas and knowledge between the two cities and give artists and support the development of new work. In Part Two of this project, the two artists from Bilbao will visit Leeds in the autumn and be hosted by East Street Arts.

Each East Street Arts member will receive:

·       A bursary of £250 for travel from/to UK.

·       A bursary of £250 inclusive of all materials and living costs.

·       Accommodation is included; each artist will be hosted by a Bilbaoarte artist.

 

What the artist needs to cover:

Travel expenses within Spain. Any other expenses not covered by the bursary.

Personal accident insurance cover to access the workshops at Bilbaoarte.

 

About Bilbaoarte

Bilbao Arte is an artistic production centre belonging to the Culture Department of the Bilbao City Council. It provides young creators with the means and infrastructures required to develop their artistic ideas, such as the availability of studio spaces, engraving and silkscreening workshops, digital imaging, sculpture, photography, a film set, documentation centre and projection rooms.

About pocagallery

pocagallery is a project by artist Hondartza Fraga, a new gallery and studio of contemporary art in Portugalete, Basque Country, for dissemination, collaboration and exchange of local and international artists. The gallery and studios are situated in the centre of Portugalete, at 5 minutes walk from the stop 'Abatxolo' (line 2 of Metro Bilbao.)
