The Script's The Thing 3

Deadline: 06/07/2026

City: Dorchester, Dorset  |  Country: United Kingdom  |  Mark Tattersall

Report this?

We’re BACK! We are thrilled The Script’s The Thing 3! is happening on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October 2026.

100 writers present work at all stages of development for stage, screen, audio and all performance.  It’s a chance to meet, chat, connect and celebrate writing for performance over two days and nine performance spaces.

Alongside the scripts (all in 15 minute slots) there are events, workshops, speakers and opportunities.  Writers, actors, directors, designers and most crucially – AUDIENCES! – will once again be enjoying new work at all stages of development.

Our previous Festivals have shown how important The Script’s The Thing is becoming both locally and nationally.

Previous scripts at the Festival have gone on to further development with NT Generate, Mayflower Studios, Pipeline – Lighthouse, regional and national tours.

It’s a great opportunity to spark conversations with arts venues and organisations in Dorset, across the wider South West and nationally. We are very grateful to The Backstage Trust for funding this year’s Festival.

Submissions

Our Festival is an opportunity for writers to present their work.

It might be a scratch presentation: with you reading all the parts, you might meet actors on the day who can read script in-hand, you might rehearse with actors you know, you might have developed the piece ready to tour and be presenting an extract to attract the attention of programmers and producers and/or providing a preview to test audience reactions.

We welcome work on screen if it’s a short film/animation, but we emphasise the importance of making a connection to the audience.

We welcome writers of all ages, but you’ll need to be 16+ to actually bring your work to the Festival, and please note that an adult must register for an account with CuratorSpace in order to submit for children under 18 years.

If you are under 16, then you would also need to let us know in your submission that you have people aged 16 and over who will be managing the presentation of your work at the Festival.

If there are themes in your work that could cause offence, please indicate them in your submission.

You can include trigger warnings within your 100-word copy or say – e.g. strong language/adult humour – if it is not clear from the title or description what your work may cover.

What do the audience really need to get your work?

You have 15 minutes which include any introducing of yourself and your work, scene setting, and you must complete within the 15 minutes (this does not include any time you need to set-up anything vital to your presentation – tune that harp, sort out positioning of chairs, set up animals etc – please don’t bring animals.. haha).

Please be minimal with technical requirements and mindful of the writers presenting work before and after your slot.

When you submit, we really want to see what you plan to bring to the Festival and how it will benefit you as a writer.

We are not looking for everything to be in place when you make your submission (you can work on your writing right up until the day of the Festival!) so please do think about what it is you’re bringing and what you’re getting to get from the Festival before you make a submission.

Remember: you don’t have to bring work to the Festival to attend, so if you’ve never been before, do consider coming along to get a feel for the Festival and take the opportunity to attend all the brilliant events - and meet like-minded people!

How do you make your selection?

Our panel of readers are looking for 100 scripts for this year’s Festival across all performance writing (stage/screen/audio/VR/etc) and all genres (drama/comedy/suspense/thriller etc) and all styles (contemporary/family/musical etc.)

While we predominantly favour scripts from writers with a strong connection to Dorset and the wider South West, we are open to scripts from anywhere.

There is no charge for submitting a script, but if selected for this year’s Festival, we ask you for £15 to secure your slot.

This helps pay for some of the costs of setting up performance spaces, printing the programme, and marketing the Festival.

It also – we hope – commits you to bringing your work to the Festival as the slots are always in high demand.

Remember – you don’t have to bring work to come to the Festival, there are plenty of things – ALL FREE - to get involved with.

You are responsible for the presentation of the work – how you do this is completely up to you.

When is the deadline?
Monday 6th July at 9am.
Will you include all the scripts that are submitted?
Unfortunately not. We started the Festival with the intention of providing a slot for everyone who wanted one but now we have to make a selection due to the volume of submissions (over 170 last year!). We have a reading panel to select who we think will most benefit from the opportunity this year and to ensure we have a balanced programme of styles, genres, and writers.
Why have you introduced a fee for successful applicants this year?
We want everyone to be able to access all the scripts, events, workshops and speakers, for FREE but there are costs to staging this Festival - creating 9 performance spaces, a panel of readers to deal with the submissions, inviting speakers, organising workshops and paying for bursaries for those in financial difficulty. As we look to manage rising costs, we’re introducing a small charge to help cover some costs and in order for you to secure your slot. We hope you understand.
How will the reading panel make its selection?
We are looking for a range of scripts. The final decision on selection will be made by assessing each writer’s work and its connection to Dorset; its suitability for the Festival (i.e. does the work bring something different to the Festival for this year), and the balance of all the 100 scripts (we don’t want solely one genre or one topic!) Please submit what you feel is your best work for this Festival, and do not be discouraged if you don’t receive a slot – it is not a reflection of who you are and what you write. We have only 100 slots, so come and get involved in the workshops, Q&As and connect with us, and support all writers.
Is there a lower age limit?
We welcome writers of all ages but you’ll need to be 16+ to actually bring your work to the Festival. If you are under 16, then you would need to let us know in your submission that you have people aged 16 and over who will be managing the presentation of your work at the Festival. If there are themes in your work that could cause offence, please indicate them in your submission.  You can include trigger warnings within your 100-word copy or say – e.g. strong language / adult humour – if it is not clear from the title or description what your work may cover.
Do you allow short films / animations?
Absolutely – please specify when submitting if you will require a screen; you’ll need to be technically self-sufficient and bring your own laptop with HDMI port which can be used to plug into our equipment.
Can I submit more than one script?
No – mainly for the reasons above! We want a diverse range of ideas, characters and stories. Remember, you only have a 15-minute slot and you must take responsibility for presenting the work yourself (Are you bringing actors? What scene(s) will best connect with an audience in this time?) – this may influence the work that you decide to submit.
What happens if I don’t get allocated a space for this Festival?
Don’t be deterred – there will be plenty to see and experience at the Festival. Come along and meet us and let’s chat about your work. We cannot emphasise enough that not getting a slot is not a reflection on you and your writing – and we encourage you to attend the Festival to see the other opportunities both locally and nationally (together with advice and information!) that can help support and develop your writing.
What kind of things can I expect to see at the Festival?
In addition to a huge array of 15-minute scripts, there will be talks and workshops featuring playwrights, screenwriters, directors, actors – all with their own views and insights into what makes a great script. Come to the Writers’ Hub and meet venues and organisations who can help support your writing.
Unsure what to submit?
You can submit a script on anything but if you’d like the opportunity to stretch your writing muscles, then you might consider writing a script specifically for the Festival. You can join with groups such as Pipeline at Lighthouse Poole to discuss ideas, or take inspiration from events like Helios held recently at Dorchester Arts.
Is this a Literature Festival?
No, this is not a literature festival – it’s for scripts and performance. There will be lots of arts and cultural organisations from across Dorset and further afield attending this Festival that can give you insight and support to the craft of writing for performance.
Are you a charity?
Yes – the event is run by Dorchester Arts, a registered charity. Many of the organisations and venues attending the event will be giving their time and expertise for free in the interests of promoting arts and culture across Dorset. We have received some public funding for the event, but we are completely reliant on our teams of volunteers and stewards to make this event happen.
Do you receive funding?
This year we were successful with a funding application to the Backstage Trust and are very grateful to them. The funding covers the majority of our core costs and enables us to keep the submission fee for scripts low. We are always interested in partnering with individuals and organisations who can help us with the financial costs of staging this Festival.
I’d love to get involved to help stage this Festival
We’d love that! We need a team of volunteers to help on the day, whether that’s helping to host at one of our venues or work with writers to ensure they have additional support. If you’d like to volunteer, please get in touch through the 'Contact curator tab' with the subject line ‘Volunteering at TSTT3’
Will there be food and drink available?
There will be indeed! Several of our venues have food and drink being served throughout the day. In addition, you’ll find plenty of gorgeous cafes around the High Street in Dorchester.
How do I get to the Festival?
Dorchester is well-served with train links from London and Bristol. The Corn Exchange and all the venues are within easy walking distance of the station.
I’m coming from a bit farther away. Where can I stay?
The King’s Arms offers rooms but will no doubt be exceptionally busy, so book early. Alternatively, there are hotels and B&Bs in the area – and only one Premier Inn (because apparently a 2nd one wouldn’t meet its financial targets and not everyone subscribes to the wonderful idea of ‘If you build it, they will come’). Discover Dorchester can help you: https://discoverdorchester.co.uk/
Are all the venues accessible?
The Corn Exchange, Shire Hall and Dorset Museum are all accessible and have hearing assistance systems. There is limited access to Tom Browns and King’s Arms for wheelchair users. Please contact us for further information.
I still have a question - what should I do?
Please get in touch through the 'Contact curator' tab – we’re a small team, but we will do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.
