Urban Coincidence is a Glasgow-wide photography poster campaign featuring images that capture something uncanny, out of place, humorous, serendipitous, cheeky or thought-provoking within the everyday. By replacing typical advertisements, this intervention overwrites aspirational consumer messaging with a portrayal of life as it is. For this open call, we seek images that reveal something unique amid regular routine, evidence the beauty and burden of getting by, evoke meaningfulness amid mundanity, and document remnants  of liveliness and its aftermath.

Selected works will be printed and displayed as large-scale posters across approximately 20 public poster sites throughout Glasgow for a two-week exhibition period. Up to 20 images will be selected.

Photography need not be formal or “professional” and images may be taken on any type of camera - phone, film, digital, or otherwise. We welcome submissions from emerging, self-taught, and established photographers alike.

All printing, poster production, and installation costs will be fully covered by the organisers at no cost to participants. While no artist fee is available for this iteration of the project, participating artists will receive:

  • Public exhibition of their work across Glasgow
  • Credit on campaign materials and digital platforms
  • Inclusion on the Urban Coincidence digital map and archive
  • Promotion through project social media channels
  • Documentation images of the installed works for portfolios and personal use

Posters will feature a discreet QR code linking to a digital map revealing all poster locations hidden in plain sight across the city - encouraging audiences to encounter the works through everyday movement and disrupting the saturation of commercial advertising with unexpected moments of reflection.

The previous iteration of Urban Coincidence was exhibited across Glasgow in February 2025.

The project reached audiences through street-level public engagement, social media circulation, and a digital poster map documenting locations across the city.

Urban Coincidence is promoted through:

Instagram: @stew.art.s @sssophaki and @d__gl_s (3.5K Followers)

The project website/digital map has received approximately over 12,000 visits during the previous campaign.

Submit up to 3 photographs, each accompanied by:

  • A brief written description
  • Location of capture
  • A short story or contextual note about the image (these texts will also function as accessible transcriptions of the visual work)

For submission purposes, standard-quality image files are sufficient. Following selection, artists will be asked to provide high-resolution files for printing. Support with formatting and print specifications can be provided if needed.

Deadline: June 7, 2026 at 11:59 pm

Urban Coincidence is generously supported by Creative Scotland.
