WAM! Working-class Artist Mothers
Deadline: 20/03/2024Country: United Kingdom | Katy Fowler
WAM! Attention Working-class Artist Mothers!
Are you a Working-class artist mother? I'm seeking to establish a community of fellow artists who understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by those balancing artistry with motherhood and working-class backgrounds.
According to Create London's 2018 commissioned report, "Panic! It's an Arts Emergency: Social Class, Taste and Inequalities in the Creative Industries," only 18.2% of individuals from working-class backgrounds are involved in music, performing arts, and visual arts, with an even smaller fraction being women. Coupled with the time constraints of caregiving responsibilities, it's evident that working-class artist mothers face significant hurdles in the arts.
The primary objective of this group is to provide a supportive network. Initially, we'll convene online to establish connections and offer mutual support to women navigating the complexities of maintaining or reigniting an artistic practice while juggling work and caregiving duties. Longer-term goals, such as exhibition opportunities or research projects, can be determined through group discussions. Join us in empowering and uplifting each other in our artistic and maternal journeys!
Our first meeting will take place online on Friday 22nd March @ 8pm - a link to join the meeting will be sent out via email after the deadline closes.
