Corridor8, in partnership with Leeds Arts University, invites proposals from an early career writer, student or recent graduate to respond to a forthcoming solo exhibition by Rachel Goodyear. The resulting text will be published alongside a catalogue essay by the leading surrealism scholar Dr Patricia Allmer (University of Edinburgh). This residency is designed for an early career writer to develop their work in a supportive organisational setting, in conversation with artists, curators and editors. A writer is invited to respond critically or creatively (or both) to the project as it unfolds.

About the Artist

Rachel Goodyear is an artist known for her intimate drawings and animations that depict dream-like fragments. She practices in the North and exhibits widely nationally and internationally. Current preoccupations include the inner wild wolf woman.

For this solo show, Goodyear will use the space experimentally as a crucible for new work. Considering the tightness of her drawings alongside the more frantic rawness of her sketches, she hopes to create a collage of animations as a dreamscape that will lead to further possibilities.

(Rachel Goodyear is represented by Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London).

What You Will Do

The writer will spend two days at Leeds Arts University during the installation (w/c 20 April 2020) and produce a 1,500-2,000-word piece of writing in a form appropriate to the residency (i.e. a range of styles, from essay-style to experimental, will be considered). The final text will be showcased on the Corridor8 website and included in a printed publication featuring a catalogue essay by Dr Patricia Allmer, and collaboratively produced with d.ust design collective, to be launched Thursday 28 May 2020.

Accommodation

Leeds Arts University will provide a residency space for the writer on agreed dates during the installation period (w/c 20 April). Leeds Arts University will cover one night's accommodation for the writer plus travel expenses, if required.

Selection Process

Applicants must be based in the North of England, at an early stage of their career and have a genuine interest in working closely with artists, curators and editors to evolve their writing practice. Proposals will be evaluated for their suitability to the residency and the candidates’ quality of writing. The selection panel comprises Lara Eggleton (Managing Editor, Corridor8) and Catriona McAra (University Curator, Leeds Arts University).

Fee

£500 + expenses (travel with receipts + one night's accommodation if required).
