Monica-Shanta’s practice encompasses digital film, interactive performance, installation and image. An aspect of her subject matter is visual language itself, its inherent cultural values, and the contexts upon which it depends. Using lived, sensory and physical experiences as the starting points for her work, she seeks to transcend culturally confined definitions of ‘self’.

Vivid, gestural oil paintings reveal a fascination with emotional states, with the help of unwitting accomplices captured from feature film and TV- their surfaces hint at depths of emotion below. Forever given pause, they comment on emotional entanglement with the artificial as a substitute – or perhaps immunisation against- the fluctuating feelings of everyday life.

I make predominantly papier-mâché sculptures. I love its immediacy, expressiveness and physicality. My work often has a performative quality. They are not just sculptures — they’re personalities, each holding part of my own identity, emotions, and fears, reflecting some of my own mental health challenges but also inviting a shared recognition.

My paintings develop from sketches and photographs taken on location, blending imagination and inspiration from architecture, archaeology, and man-made structures. From my studio space at Arnup Studios in York, I create, teach and exhibit my art, sharing my collections, prints and cards. I exhibit both solo and collaboratively across the UK and locally, in galleries, art fairs and art cafes.
