    I am a mainly self taught painter, working in oils, acrylic and gouache. I have worked as a doctor since 2003. I started to paint as a way to relax and escape from the stress of working in critical care during the pandemic. Now I paint for the joy of learning and creating.

    I create sculpture and art installations using everyday materials and using repetition. My practice is firmly rooted in process art and influenced by postminimalist artists such as Richard Serra and Eva Hesse. I embody difficult thoughts and mental states in physical form. I'm interested in making work that sparks feelings in the viewer before thoughts.

    I have taken pictures throughout my life. My Dad was a keen photographer so we often shared our images, giving us a common interest. I enjoy landscape, abstract or anything that catches my eye.     A photo-based artist, through my own history of emigration, from Northern England to Aotearoa, New Zealand (and back and forth..) my work is concerned with notions of home and belonging and how we identify with our surrounding landscapes. I am currently engaged with various long-term social documentary projects, and the digitisation of my late grandfather - M J Burgess - photographic archive.

    I am a travel photographer with over 40 years experience. My work is very real, never contrived or retouched, only using natural light and careful composition. I'm never happier then when in the chaos of a new city searching for new images. I create my own limited edition Giclée prints which are mounted and signed. I continues to travel and add to the collection regularly.
