    Claire Mc Dermott is a working-class artist whose research combines art, biophysics and the humanities through social and environmental issues, while her multidisciplinary skills created sculpture, photography, drawing, print and poems by making connections between plants, glass and air. As an environmentalist, she envisions a planet that shares and represents all cultures.

    I am a visual artist, born in Scotland and living in the Scottish Borders. My background in craft and fine art is wide and varied. I first trained in ceramics and then studied fine art sculpture and printmaking, at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, from which I graduated BA Hons in 1992.     I am a magnanimous despot, a magpie, a collector of images, talk too much, questionable sanity, semi-retired educator and artist. I never fitted into any sort of academic or media box and use which ever media conveys my intentions best. My current images are all related to everyday themes - shopping, walking in the High Peak, trying to be sustainable, exploring ideas making them visually concrete

    I am a designer maker working often in ceramics. I see the beauty in the broken, overlooked and discarded. My latest work was using fully fired ceramics that were in the bin and, crushing these up, I put them inside jesmonite sculptures. I want to highlight the moments in our lives where we feel broken, worthless and discarded... in order to remind us we are strong and valuable.

    My material-led practice includes sculpture, textiles and painting. I studied Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art, and History of Art & French at UCL. I have exhibited in the UK and Ireland, received funding from Arts Council England, and was a Lead Artist on Artichoke’s national artwork Processions in 2018.

Her areas of interest include locational identity and the domestic, often from a feminist perspective and explore the use of nature and the domestic.
