I am a Northern Irish artist, born in Belfast, now based in Kent. My work is rooted in cultural identity: “The early life-experience is central ….you aren’t so much trying to describe it as trying to locate it….. like putting your hand into a nest and finding something beginning to hatch out in your head”. Seamus Heaney I respond to the influences, stories, voices that shape people and place

I am a magnanimous despot, a magpie, a collector of images, talk too much, questionable sanity, semi-retired educator and an artist. I never fitted into any sort of academic box and if you saw me in the street, I'm not sure you would recognise any of the above. My current images are all related to everyday themes - family, shopping, walking in the High Peak, and poking fun with a dark twist.

I m a former recipient of the Jerwood Drawing Prize and was shortlisted for the John Moores Prize in 2014, winning the Visitors Choice.

www.mariaemilov.net I explore the vibrant texture of the image and painting. I feel captivated by the interference of the past and the different cultures in human life. My hope is that a work of Art could guide us a step further in the no man’s land of our past, acquired knowledge and realities check. Within Art, we are entering a powerful intellectual and emotional path in our communication.
