    My art practice spans work with natural colour and experimental and sustainable film photography. I was born in former Czecho-Slovakia and my present art practice is informed by my Slavic roots and folklore cultural heritage.     My name is Gemma Yates and I'm a painter from the UK. I love to paint natural forms such as flowers, trees, figures and thriving landscapes.     I have a passion for beautiful flowers that are grown in my street garden in Kirkstall, I carefully select, press and dry these flowers; then make what has been described as “breathtaking”pieces of art - that are best appreciated when seen in person, framed or unframed, produced into abstract Botanical art and Boho pieces at affordable prices.

    I am currently producing work that is a a combination of paintings and mixed media relief pieces that combine embroidery, paper clay, precious metal clay, paper, watercolour, ink and found objects. Each piece is accompanied with a poem about and as a response to the physical work. I also work as a development librarian.

    I am a teacher of Geography and until a few years ago I never thought I had a creative bone in my body. I then discovered wood turning and the joy of shaping wood as if it was clay. I have rapidly moved away from traditional wood turning and like to use a variety of non-traditional wood and different materials that enhance the wood. I like form and shape inspired by nature.

    My favourite subject is the English countryside, especially trees, and I am captivated by low light and the challenge of trying to capture it in oils. I love to use oil paint but oil pastels and oil sticks are my deepest passion.

    I've been working in education as a technician in various guises for over ten years. This has given me a wealth of knowledge and encounters that crosses specialist subject areas and allows me to bring in processes from different specialism into my art practice. I am currently undertaking my Masters in History of Design run jointly by the RCA and V&A.
