    Aly Smith is a working class artist with bi-polar and a few other mental health diagnosis thrown in depending which health care provider she sees. Her work often looks at the comedic side of her bi-polar whilst wanting to raise awareness of mental health and the struggles that herself and people have.

    I work with site-responsive installation, photography and video using light, space and wind and am inspired by the ordinary, the everyday and the need to find meaning in our lives. I studied at Kingston University and the Royal Academy, London and have exhibited throughout the UK and abroad including Spain, Germany, Iceland, Korea and USA.

    My mixed-media practice is influenced by science and often draws inspiration from my Dutch/Brazilian heritage. It aims to encourage the viewer to question knowledge and value systems by teasing their cognitive senses. Since graduating from Goldsmiths in 2004 I have exhibited in galleries, museums and alternative venues across the UK and done residencies in France, Holland and Finland.

    Recent graduate of a first class degree in BA (Hons) Fine Art at the Northern School of Art. I enjoy the process of investigating landscape via graphite, paint, photography and collage. My practice is informed by posthuman design thinking and nature-inspired processes, focusing on how textiles emerge through the interaction of materials, machines and environmental conditions, shaping form, movement and material qualities.
