    My work is completely concerned with context, process and materials. I make paintings, drawings and collages, often on a very large scale. I use the dark room as an experimental space, making camera less imagery and double exposed 35mm. I use Lo-Fi audio techniques collecting field recordings and glitched samples.

    Ryan French graduated with a first degree from Manchester School of Art and is currently based in Manchester. His practice consists of painting, illustration and digital art.     Shapes jump out at me. Encouraged by my own stereo blindness, shapes that could be seen as a face or body, merge and spring from anywhere. In nature, in the studio or reading a magazine, these pareidolic face experiences influence my collages, photographs and paintings. They explore the flatness of my perception and the depth of what seems to be reality.

    My work anchors me to reality, a lens of visual translation that enables me to attempt to understand human thought and behaviour at a deeper level. The unreality of day to day existence is relentless, a maze of whirring dualities and circus mirrors, through paint I tune in to the collective consciousness and become a translator for the seen but not heard.

    I am a photographer and a qualified teacher. I tutor workshops in basic digital photography and cyanotype printing. My main practice is in documentary photography. I also have a passion for Camera Obscura and have designed and built my own portable CO. Inspired by largescale artworks I also have a passion for light paintings and abstractions made at night.

    In 1985 I graduated in textile design and printed surfaces. Following a solo career as a textile designer and printer I made a natural transition towards abstract painting in 1997. In 2021 I decided to leave a specialist teaching post to become a full time painter and establish my practice and professional presence. I live and work in Ditchling, East Sussex.
